Choosing a sofa for your living room is always exciting as its such a big piece of furniture and it can really impact the aesthetic of the room but for those same reasons choosing a sofa can be stressful. A quick way of making the process of choosing a sofa a little less stressful is making sure you pick the right size sofa in the first place! Once you've got your sofa size down you can then start shopping around for the colour and style you want, rather than finding a sofa you like and realising it doesn't fit or it looks too small in your room.

To help here is a quick guide on how to choose the right size sofa for your room. Follow these steps and you'll have the perfect sized sofa in no time!

Before we start you're going to need a couple of things:

  • Measuring tape
  • Painter's masking tape or something similar (if you use something else just be aware you're going to be sticking it to the floor so make sure you can remove it without damaging the flooring)

Step 1: Measure your room, hallways and doorways

Yellow Tapemeasure

First things first, it's always a good idea to get a measure of the whole room as this will give a rough guide on what sofa size you can fit in your room and how much 'space' a sofa might take up in that room.

Once you've got the room measured you'll want to measure any hallways and doorways that you might have to navigate when moving the sofa into your room. The last thing you want to do is to pick a sofa that fits your room perfectly and then when it arrives you realise it won't actually fit through any of the doors (yup this happened to me!)

Once you've got everything measured its time for step 2.

Step 2: Tape your sofa area (and your other pieces of furniture)

Person using painters tape to mark floor

You've done the boring bit, now comes the fun part. Picking a spot for your sofa!

You'll have a natural feel for where you'd like to put your sofa so start there. Start using your painter's tape to mark out the shape of your sofa. It could be a simple 2 seater sofa or it could a huge corner sofa its up to you. The main point of this step is to determine the maximum size sofa you can fit in your 'sofa spot'.

One thing to bear in mind at this stage is that if you're going to have other pieces of furniture in the room like a coffee table or end table it's good to have roughly 30 - 45cm distance between the sofa and any other piece of furniture. You'll also want to make sure you have about 50-55cm of room in front of the sofa so that you don't have to squeeze down the small space between your sofa and coffee table.

Once you've taped the area of your sofa it's time to move on to step 3

Step 3: Measure the sofa area

This step is simple. Measure the the width and length of your taped sofa area. At this stage its also worth making a note of windowsill height and any shelves that might get in the way of someone sitting down. You don't want to buy a sofa, get it in the house and then bang your head on a shelf when you first sit down!

These measurements you've taken are the ones you use when choosing your new sofa! Remember theses measurements are the maximum size of sofa you can fit in your room. You can always choose a smaller sofa if you think it would look better or you find one you really like!

Quick tip: Think about what your sofa will be used for

You're probably thinking a sofa is for sitting on! Well, you'd be right.

But when you're choosing your sofa it's worth considering what the sofa will be used for... are you going to have guests over all the time? Then buying a sofa that fills the space you measured earlier is probably a good thing. But if having people over isn't your thing and you're more of a binge watch Netflix person then maybe a smaller sofa might be a better idea and you can use the other space for end tables or lighting.
