Dining tables are one of the most essential pieces in any home. We often use our dining tables for eating, working or entertaining guests but with all that use, how do you keep your dining table looking great? Whether you have a marble dining table or it's solid wood we've got the tips you need to keep your table looking brand new!

Caring for your solid wood or veneer dining table

  • First things first, clean regularly. As obvious as that sounds its the key to keeping your table looking brand new. Make sure you wipe down your table with a damp cloth and dry it after every meal.
  • Always use a microfibre cloth as other more abrasive cloths can cause damage and that's what we're trying to avoid here!
  • Use table mats, they offer protection from both spillages, scratches and heat from your hot food.
  • Keep your dining table out of direct sunlight. This is a tough one as having the sun pour in over the dining table is a lovely idea but it can cause the colouring to fade so try to keep exposure to direct sunlight to a minimum.
  • Keep your table away from radiators. Placing your dining table too close to your radiator may cause the wood to warp or split.
  • Finally, avoid using harsh cleaning products, they'll likely strip the table and create their own stain. Instead, fill a bowl with warm water and add up to 3 tablespoons of vinegar. A white vinegar is a strong acidic liquid so it’s important that it's watered down with water. Acidity is what makes white vinegar ideal for cleaning your dining table after food has been spilt but be sure to have the right ratio between vinegar and water – to find out the right ratio for your table start with one tablespoon a vinegar mixed with warm water and try it out a small spot on your table to see if its too strong.

Caring for your varnished or lacquered dining table

  • Follow the same protective steps as above
  • Avoid using harsh cleaning products and instead stick to white vinegar and warm water. For Varnished or lacquered dining tables a white vinegar solution that uses 2-3 tablespoons should be ok but once again it's always best to test a weaker solution on a small part of your table before diving in the deep end!

Caring for your concrete, marble or stone dining table

  • Dust regularly. Be sure to dust your marble, concrete or stone tables regularly by wiping them down with a damp microfibre cloth that you have and then dry with a clean microfibre cloth.
  • Many people think that concrete is a hard and tough surface, but it is actually really absorbent and can pick up the colours from your spillages so make sure you clean up those spills as soon as they happen!
  • All these dining table materials are prone to scratching, to prevent this you can use table mats and coasters and keep sharp objects like chopping knives away from the tabletop.
  • For marble dining tables avoid using the white vinegar solution and any abrasive chemical instead stick to warm water and a mild soap.
  • For concrete tables warm water should do just fine, if you have really bad stain you can use a very small amount of mild soap
